Cover Design Practice

Just another post about cover design :) I am really enjoying making covers. I don't think it is something I would do for other people, because I don't like being told what to do with creative work, so I would be upset if the people I made for weren't happy with the final product. I've been trying to set myself tasks to learn new skills, and I have mainly been following my own tutorial and making book covers inspired by various genres.

I've got a few examples of book covers which are horror or fantasy inspired here:

I have also been trying to improve at other aspects of graphic design, and I was working with my book Morrigan to create various pieces with the logo on which are all suitable for the book but focus on different aspects. For the Instagram-sized image below I managed to achieve an awesome 3d effect which took several layers and a lot of playing around to achieve. I might do tutorials on things like that at some point if anyone is interested.

There are so many aspects to cover design that it was not possible to explain the choices I make and the things I think about in the 'Book Cover 101' series, but this image had a lot of thought put into it even though it was just for fun. I think my next post will be about creating adverts. I know ad cards are a topic that has come up a few times recently, and I am at a point in my journey where advertising my work on social media is an investment that may benefit me rather than throwing money into the void. I'll do that the same way I did the Book Cover 101 series by going through the steps of making an ad card and then sharing the results (good or bad!) a month or so later.
