Morrigan: Trailer & Storyboard

Trailer

Assets

Morrigan is one of my character things, it took me hours to edit because it originally had Neko ears and stuff.

Ares is a picture my friend took, I edited the eyes but nothing else.

The heraldry is mine, I use it in the SCA - it's inspired by this book because the book is the entire reason I joined. It's a white wolf between 2 moons so there is stuff representing Morrigan and Ares.

The random wolf is something I edited, and the Gothic archway is a photograph I took of Coventry Cathedral.

Information about it

If you're interested in trailer stuff, I also have a post about a trailer I made for Nemesis. The aim of this trailer was to create something that gives an idea of what the book is about, while introducing the character of Morrigan in her own words and voice.

Because 99% of the book is in her words, through her eyes, it made sense for the trailer to be.

It also needed to be clear it is a Medieval setting, and to begin with I made a simple tagline trailer for inspiration:

I liked the architectural elements but that was pretty much the only thing I liked, so I trashed that and decided to go with the book idea. There are a few things within Morrigan that make that relevant. Ares (the male lead) has a huge library, and enjoys reading. He also writes a journal, and keeps track of the history of his family and pack. Morrigan was raised as part of a pack of nomadic wolves, and she was treated poorly, but she can read, and she is a passionate and determined enough woman that she teaches herself to write so that people don't look down on her.

The story is told by her, and I thought that having some notes and images that are relevant to her story in an old looking book would make it seem like it is her noting down things from her past as she recollects the things she talks about throughout the book.

I chose to use two Blackletter calligraphy fonts for the 'writing' in the book, with the first being simpler/cruder (as if she noted them when she was learning to write) and the second being finer quality.

The text I used for the overlays is taken from the first 10 or so chapters of the book. I tried to put together passages that reveal a bit about her and her relationship with Ares without giving away too much about their situation. The passages show that she was, at some point, close to death; they don't reveal why that was. They tell us that she had a vision of Ares; whether this was supernatural or just her imagination isn't clear. They show that he is an Alpha, and that she is wary of people and sees them as a threat.

I ended it with a quote: It's up to you now, White Wolf...

It's the same sort of thing as what I did in the Nemesis trailer. In that the people watching are presented with the question Talia was posed: what would you give to bring him back? I thought this was a good ending for Morrigan's trailer because is is one line, but it should leave people wondering what is up to her. The actual quote relates to bodily autonomy and consent, but both the quote and the scene it is from are representative of what her journey is, and why her relationship with Ares is so important.
