My Morrigan: Part Three

I'll be posting something with a more literary focus next, but I wanted to share an update on My Morrigan. When I started this project, I figured I would just make a dress, buy a wig, and get some contact lenses. I've made countless costumes before, and I thought this would be no different.

Window to the Soul

I found quickly that it wasn't as simple as that, and that the phrase 'the eyes are the window to the soul' is completely true. Morrigan's eyes are such an important part of her character that I needed them to be absolutely perfect.

The trouble is, orange isn't a color that is very popular for cosplay or costuming, and the orange lenses I found were all this really unnatural looking shade that was not designed to look realistic (it was just a neon orange circle).

So, I spent a very long time trying to find lenses which are orange, rather than red/yellow/brown. They had to be a notably unnatural looking shade, but also expressive and lifelike rather than a cheap costume lens from a joke shop.

The specific shade is described a number of times, and I gave her these fiery eyes the shade of Baltic amber for a number of reasons: she's a fiery woman, the book is technically a spin-off of Centuries and her eye color is a trait that is seen in her descendents 600 years later, it is associated with latent magical abilities in both books, and it is unusual enough to be notable in Centuries and a cause to keep Morrigan away from humans in the 15th Century.

When I finally found the right lenses, I was extremely excited, and I ordered them even though they had to be shipped to me from Japan. I think it was worth it, because they arrived today and as soon as I tried on one of the pairs I felt like I was looking into Morrigan's eyes.

Now I just need the white lashes...
